UJA Federation of New York

GPG has formed a strong partnership with several organizations, among them the UJA Federation of New York, with whom we are co-funding several projects in North America, including COJECO and Ezra USA. The world's largest local philanthropy, UJA-Federation of New York strengthens community and helps 1.4 million people in New York City, Westchester County, and Long Island, as well as 3 million in Israel and 60 other countries. In addition to its enduring relationship with the network of over 100 local and overseas agencies, UJA-Federation of New York has innovative funding relationships with almost 400 synagogues and 300 Jewish schools in New York, 200 Jewish community centers and 25 Hillels in the former Soviet Union and Israel, as well as a burgeoning landscape of Jewish educational institutions in the FSU - 100 Sunday schools, 36 Jewish day schools, and 50 early-childhood centers. Last year UJA-Federation of New York had appropriated $147.6 million for program- service activities: $135.5 million for grants, $3.8 million for direct services to the agencies and other beneficiaries, and $8.3 million for planning, oversight, and related activities.

GPG is providing a grant for the expansion of COJECO's Center Without Walls (CWW) initiative, a project funded by the UJA Federation of New York, which introduces Russian-speaking Jews to the richness of New York Jewish life by serving as a catalyst to promote and strengthen the dialogue between Russian-speaking Jews and the American Jewish community. CWW provides a number of services to help Jewish communal organizations, offer culturally appropriate programs and create welcoming environments for Russian- speaking Jews. CWW staff provide expertise on Russian Jewish cultural practices, perceptions and attitudes; grants that support events and ongoing programs; a resource center offering speakers, films, literature and promotional opportunities; and outreach assisting agencies to develop effective promotional campaigns.

GPG will be exploring the expansion of the partnership with the NY Federation to other Jewish Federations in North America, in communities with significant Russian-Speaking Jewish populations.
