History to the Taste: Literature and Culinary Evening

History to the Taste: Literature and Culinary Evening

Genesis Philanthropy Group supported this unique initiative, which aims to encourage its participants to be more socially active members of the Kazan Jewish community. In 2010, the Afifon Jewish Youth Center in Kazan created a new format for young Jewish adults to participate in community life. Participants gathered in Kazan cafes and restaurants for evenings of literature and culinary art, and learned about literary works that describe Jewish life, the Jewish household and recipes for traditional Jewish dishes. Topics were enhanced by film and photography; participants also engaged in active discussions and played trivia games.

The target audience was young adults between 25 and 35 years of age. The project was supported jointly by Genesis Philanthropy Group and several local donors.

This grant is a part of Grassroots annual competition, organized by Genesis Philanthropy Group and UJA-Federation of New York. The goal of the competition is to discover and support the best local initiatives aimed at the revival of Jewish identity, the preservation of cultural and historical heritage and the development of socially active Jewish communities.
