Support for the Jewish Studies Department at the Lomonosov Moscow State University

Support for the Jewish Studies Department at the Lomonosov Moscow State University

Since 2007, Genesis Philanthropy Group has supported what is widely considered to be the most important intellectual and educational resource of the Russian Jewish community – the Jewish Studies Department at the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU).

The department trains a new generation of Jewish intellectuals and community leaders, and actively participates in the community by providing community-based and university preparatory education. One of the most important tasks of the project is to strengthen the academic potential of the department and to establish an academic school of thought. To this end, special emphasis is placed on targeted support of young faculty members who have been educated in the field of Jewish studies at Russia's leading universities.

Another important component of the MSU Jewish Studies Department is an internship program for university instructors from regions outside of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Such internships result in new courses and curricula on Jewish subjects at local universities in Russia and throughout the FSU. Since 2008, 20 instructors from various FSU universities, including those in Tomsk, Vladimir, Yekaterinburg, Rostov, Minsk, Khabarovsk, Chelyabinsk, Barnaul, Birobidzhan, Tyumen, Brest and Dushanbe, have had an opportunity to intern at the MSU for periods of one to nine months.

As with other higher education institutions supported by GPG, MSU's young academic staff is also encouraged to give open lectures to the wider Jewish community of Moscow, other RF cities and CIS.

In 2010, Genesis Philanthropy Group funded the purchase of equipment and furniture for the new office of the Jewish Studies and the Jewish Civilization Center at MSU, which serves as a venue for academic and community events.

This grant is a part of Genesis Philanthropy Group's large program which supports Academic Jewish Studies in the FSU.
