“Masa Shorashim” for Jewish students at non-Jewish schools

“Masa Shorashim” for Jewish students at non-Jewish schools

Masa Shorashim (Journey to the Roots) is a project started with the support of the Jewish Agency and the Israeli Ministry of Education.

The project involves grade 10 and 11 students attending Heftziba schools in the FSU.

The purpose of Masa Shorashim is to restore the memory of Jewish people and communities in Eastern Europe and form a strong, historical identity.

The program has several stages:

  • Trip preparation
  • Educational trips (shorashim) to locations of Jewish historical significance in Lithuania and Poland
  • Series of final lectures

In 2015, Genesis Philanthropy Group supported the participation of 15 Jewish students who are permanent members of the Adain Lo teen club.

Goals and objectives

  • Study Jewish heritage and contemporary culture, and teach participants about tragic events in Jewish history
  • Give Jewish youth at non-Jewish schools an opportunity to collaborate with other Jewish pupils
  • Create a community of researchers who study Jewish historical and cultural heritage, and create an interest in independent and intensive study of participants' personal Jewish roots
  • Establish ties with Jewish communities and program partners in different countries
  • Publish, and encourage discussion of, materials collected by trip participants, and make it available across the Jewish Diaspora
