Papa School - A New Form of Support for Jewish Families

Papa School - A New Form of Support for Jewish Families

In 2010, Genesis Philanthropy Group awarded a grant to the Saint Petersburg Jewish Welfare Center Hesed Avraham for a project known as Papa School, which focuses on young and expectant fathers. The School's educational programs give participants an opportunity to learn about:

• Existing programs for Jewish children and families in St. Petersburg;
• Parental behavior and psychological adaptations during pregnancy, childbirth and the first months after birth;
• Changes in family life and parental responsibilities after the birth of a child.
In addition, the school organizes lectures and meetings with Jewish education specialists.
The project is an important step toward involving young families in community life before and after the birth of a child.

This grant is a part of Grassroots annual competition, organized by Genesis Philanthropy Group and UJA-Federation of New York. The goal of the competition is to discover and support the best local initiatives aimed at the revival of Jewish identity, the preservation of cultural and historical heritage and the development of socially active Jewish communities.

Goals and Objectives

  • Engage inactive young adults, including those from interfaith families, in community life.
  • Inform future fathers, and through them, their family members, friends and acquaintances about existing programs for Jewish children and families in St. Petersburg.
  • Establish a new form of support for Jewish families.
