Grants in the Former Soviet Union

The Book Fair Traveling Companion

The Book Fair Traveling Companion

  • Grant period: 2008

In 2008, Genesis Philanthropy Group funded a festival of Jewish books in several Russian and Ukrainian cities in conjunction with city-wide book fairs. Gesharim Publishing (Bridges of Culture/Gishrey Tarbut Association) set up booths at the book fairs in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod and Lviv, showcasing Jewish books. Residents of these cities were introduced to Israeli scientists, historians and writers, along with an opportunity to attend a number of interesting educational events.

The festival program included concerts, meetings with well-known representatives of Jewish culture, and additional events organized by Gesharim in libraries, universities and youth clubs. The programs were intended primarily for a young audience.

This festival introduced the FSU reading public to Jewish literature; for those already familiar with Jewish literature, it was an opportunity to discover new topics and areas of interest. The festival was supported by the Genesis Philanthropy Group and the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Goals and Objectives

  • Introduce a wide, primarily young and Jewish, audience to the traditions and achievements of Jewish and Israeli literature.
