Zshuk Jewish Children’s Art Initiative

Zshuk Jewish Children’s Art Initiative

Zshuk Jewish Children's Art Initiative is an educational program based on a progressive philosophy of education and positive artistic practices.

The Initiative is made up of artists, educators, and parents, who transform the community through their cultural presence, role as mentors, and Jewish wisdom. Its goal of transformation is accomplished through artist practices, youth art and education programs, art shows, guest artist lectures, workshops, and trips.

In 2012, Zshuk launched a new pilot program, the content of which included Jewish art workshops at major New York cultural institutions that offered participating Russian-speaking Jewish preteens and teens an opportunity for Jewish cultural experiences in a museum setting. These workshops were also held in the Russian-speaking Jewish communities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Canada. Also, Jewish holiday celebrations were held in order to introduce Russian-speaking Jewish youth to their first Jewish holiday experience. Lastly, interactive theater performances for the whole family were created based on Jewish children's stories. Each performance took place in a different location, such as a community space, museum, or park.

Financial support for this program was provided by Genesis Philanthropy Group along with the Covenant Foundation, Joshua Venture Fellowship, and other generous funders.
